The main Torrevieja town is at the southern end of the Valencian community. It is famous for the two huge saltwater lagoons which surround it. These "Salterns of Torrevieja" are the second biggest in the world and certainly the largest in Europe. The salt flats have been designated as national parks and well worth a visit as they attract more than 250 species of bird including the beautiful flamingos. The flats have been used for salt production since Roman times and still provide salt for export worldwide.
